Kim Hyun Joong plays Baek Seung Jo, a cocky student who is good at literally everything. He has never struggled to achieve or learn anything in his life before. He is nonchalant about EVERYTHING, and seems to be cold. Jung So Min plays Oh Ha Ni, the determined, naive girl who’s in love with him, and has been since she first layed eyes on him on the first day of high school. Ha Ni is not book smart at all and, at the beginning of the drama, is in class F… As opposed to the mighty Seung Jo, who’s in class A. She is good at nothing and especially bad at cooking. But Ha Ni does have one quality that defines her: her determination and perseverance. This is what Seung Jo loves in Ha Ni.
Ha Ni writes Seung Jo a love letter, confessing her feelings. When she gets her letter back, she sees that cold hearted Seung Jo graded the letter and gave her a D- . As he hands over her letter, he states, “I hate stupid girls”. Soon after, during an earthquake, Ha Ni’s house collapses and her and her father are left without a place to live. Turns out, Seung Jo’s father is a old friend of Ha Ni’s father’s… And offers their guest rooms to the father and daughter. So now, they live together. While living together, Ha Ni and Seung Jo grow closer, but not by much. It’s almost as if Seung Jo has a nice on & off switch, or bipolar personalities. He shows random acts of kindness towards Oh Ha Ni, and in the next moment stings her with harsh and cruel words. Obviously, these random acts of kindness show that he’s grown fond of her, but is unwilling to spoil her with his feelings or unwilling to admit them to himself. They continue down this road, with Seung Jo’s mother occasionally meddling with the situation (in Ha Ni’s favour though. She happens to love Ha Ni and loves the idea of having her as a daughter-in-law), with an inch of progress every few episodes.
Of course, as in every idol drama, there are antagonists that create love triangles and love… squares. Except in this case, they’re understanding and compassionate enough to back down; which makes us feel sorry for their broken hearts. Boon Joon Gu follows Ha Ni around like a little duckling, and loves her just as much as she loves Seung Jo (he’s sort of the male version of Oh Ha Ni, and their situations are the same. The only differences are that Ha Ni is nicer than Seung Jo; & she gets her man in the end, while Joon Gu is left heart broken… for awhile). The female version of Seung Jo happens to be his admirer and Ha Ni’s enemy: Yoon Hae Ra. She’s pretty, smart, and not to mention rich. She has her eyes set on Seung Jo the minute he enters university. She likes to make fake, cheery comments to Ha Ni, the meaning of her words usually mocking Ha Ni. For this, we, as the audience, automatically hate her. But who can blame her? She’s the female version of Seung Jo. Only I think Seung Jo is worse in a way. Hae Ra is able to admit her feelings while Seung Jo takes about 10 – 11 episodes to realize he has grown to love Ha Ni.
